8 steps to self protection

If you regularly use the internet, in particular for online transactions and/or receive a lot of spam - system protection is the key:

  1. Discuss your computer protection needs with us or someone who can provide knowledgeable advice.

  2. Keep all firewall systems and server & desktop anti-virus protection up to date.

  3. Always install any patches or security updates that are required for your computer's operating system.

  4. Use a spam filter.

  5. Do not open emails from addresses you do not recognise.

  6. Remember that financial institutions usually do not send emails — if you are unsure contact the bank or go to their website. Do not use any information in the email.

  7. Do not follow any links in spam emails.

  8. Delete the email.

What is Spam?

Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages.

While the most widely recognised form of spam is e-mail spam, which include such themes get-rich-quick cons, bogus lottery wins, Nigerian scams, miracle cures, pornography, offers of restricted drugs like Viagra, loans and fake watches, there are other forms of spam including instant messaging spam, spam in blogs, and mobile phone messaging spam.

Various sources including Symantec report that over 100 billion spam messages, or 4 out of every 5 emails are sent every day. Surprisingly, approx 80% of all spam is sent by fewer than 200 spammers.

Spam continues to frustrate and confuse, not to mention annoy e-mail users.

Estimates peg the cost to businesses at between 15 & 30 minutes per staff member per day.
